It turned an already existing musical
style into a cultural phenomenon. It took John Travolta from sitcom
heart-throb to hugely bankable movie star, and it made the BeeGees
rich beyond the dreams of avarice.
And as it turns out, the New York
magazine article (published on this day in 1976) upon which "Saturday
Night Fever" was based was in fact a
complete fabrication, start to finish except for the existence of Brooklyn, an awkward point that its
author finally got around to admitting in 1994.
