On this date in 1889, Wyoming legislators drafted the
first state constitution to guarantee the right of women to vote (the constitution was adopted the following July). A friend of mine traveled to Wyoming for her marriage ceremony, just for that reason.
One hundred and eleven years later, Dick Cheney would make a
hasty flight to Wyoming to change his voter registration from Texas to Wyoming, thereby clearing a constitutional hurdle to naming himself George Bush's vice presidential running-mate.
