The unforgiving minute

Want to see the two paths America is managing to head down simultaneously? Check out the one of the new leading indicators of the zeitgeist:

Backpacks.

Voltaic Systems has a solar powered backpack that will recharge an iPod or cell phone while you're walking around, whether out in the sun or indoors under incandescent light. I saw one of these at Tour De Fat last weekend, and they definitely capture the high ground where Green intersects with Hi-Tech.

And at the other end of the spectrum, MJ Safety Solutions ("Ballistic Protection for your Family") is marketing the My Child's Pack--a bulletproof backpack whose features also include a zippered pocket for an mp3 player--which will finally allow Security Moms 'n' Dads to send their kids to school with affordable, practical, ballistic protection.

Minute's up.

You know that if a kid actually carried a couple books in a back pack it would stop a 9mm cold. Really, your 9.95 Walmart backpack and a history book would do the job. Heck, a history text and a mathematics text would stop an assault rifle bullet. Ah well, paranoia is good for the economy, just ask GWB

BTW the "minute" thing is great stuff.
