Thank goodness they weren't the Animal Liberation Front in Birmingham, or we'd all be in big trouble

Okay, let's review:

These guys qualify as "domestic terrorists," according to the FBI:
Open Letter From Herb Grey,
Attorney for Schumacher Furs & Outerwear

Imagine 18 months of weekly pandemonium involving naked people running around outside your downtown Portland business screaming profanities such as "F*** TORTURER!", "WHORE!", "WE'RE GOING TO GET YOU!" and "YOU SUCK!" at you, your customers and no one in particular who happens to be walking by. Imagine feces, urine, and red paint being thrown on your storefront, or a sign of a Molotov cocktail being posted on your building. Imagine bullhorns and other noisemakers sounding by the hour. Imagine members of extremist organizations threatening you, your employees, and customers with bodily injury- or worse- with chants like "You're not safe if you wear fur, we will get you that's for sure!". Imagine getting out of your car at home after a long workday, only to hear a voice call to you by name out of the darkness. Imagine protestor efforts to sneak into your store to hide messages in your merchandise, or storming the door in a rage as elderly customers are trying to leave.

But these guys don't qualify as "domestic terrorists"--they're merely a "violent and anti-government group:"
Simultaneous raids carried out in four Alabama counties Thursday turned up truckloads of explosives and weapons, including 130 grenades, an improvised rocket launcher and 2,500 rounds of ammunition belonging to the small, but mightily armed, Alabama Free Militia.

Six alleged members of the Free Militia also were arrested by federal authorities and are being held without bond.

Investigators said the DeKalb County-based group had not made any specific threats or devised any plots, but was targeted for swift dismantling because of its heavy firepower. The militia, which called itself the Naval Militia at one point, had enough armament to outfit a small army.

But the good news is that the Free Militia, while armed to the teeth, is not throwing vials of blood on fur-wearing matrons, and is thus by definition not a collection of domestic terrorists.

A "violent and anti-government group?" Good lord--that might as well be John Bolton and his DC Republican cronies forcing their way in to stop the Florida recount in 2000, except, of course, that as English speaking Judeo-Christian white Americans they can't by definition be . . . you know. That word.

Are you feeling safer yet? Or are you feeling that the people who have placed themselves in charge of our soi-disant war on terror are deeply, deeply unserious about this?

(Hat tip to Crooks and Liars.)

I've been following this case closely (I happen to live above the store). I would seriously question the allegations of the attorney and the Schumachers in the Schumacher case; and I would be wary of presenting their statements as fact. Just because they claim it doesn't make it so, and Schumacher seems to have a history of of lying and exaggerating.
