I am, incidentally, Honorary President of the American Humanist Association, having succeeded the late, great science fiction writer Isaac Asimov in that totally functionless capacity. We had a memorial service for Isaac a few years back, and I spoke and said at one point, "Isaac is up in heaven now." It was the funniest thing I could have said to an audience of humanists. I rolled them in the aisles. It was several minutes before order could be restored. And if I should ever die, God forbid, I hope you will say, "Kurt is up in Heaven now." That's my favorite joke.

I have the same kind of humorous response when I see cartoons of Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel meeting again in a heavenly movie theatre, where, as more than one artist has posited, Gene 'saved roger the aisle seat'.
The true subtlety of the jest comes in that the auditorium is typically deserted, save for Roger and Gene.
That leaves me laughing my ass off, because Roger was an out-there secular humanist. I think he would have found it banal as well as hilarious.
What I really think of as funny is that the cartoonists probably don't even realize they're telling a joke.
I've also always found it kind of funny, in the KV quote, that he slipped in "God forbid."
