Sunday morning toons: This is your brain on spinach

I'm not finished working on my new year's resolutions but I already feel fairly confident that 2012 -- even with the prospect of the most expensive and nationally embarrassing election cycle in American history -- still will manage to be less of a dog's breakfast than 2011 was.

Yes, I have a dream.

Today's selections have been lovingly hand-selected from the week's political cartoon pages at Slate, Time, Mario Piperni, About.com, and Daryl Cagle:

p3 Picks of the Week:   Mike Luckovich, Jimmy Margulies, Lisa Benson, Mike Peters, Steve Artley, Steve Breen, Bob Englehart, John Trevor, and J. D. Crowe.

p3 Best of Show: Pat Oliphant.

p3 “Let's Ditch this Meme for 2012” Citation: Rick McKee

p3 “What's in Your Wallet?” Award: Mike Luckovich.

p3 Award for Best Adaptation from Another Medium: Jeff Parker

p3 World Toon Review: http://www.caglecartoons.com/media/cartoons/86/2011/12/27/103618_600.jpg (China), Cam Cardow (Canada), and Ingrid Rice (Canada).

Ann Telnaes presents 2011: The Year in Review.

Mark Fiore, on the other hand, presents 2011: The Year in Crazy, and the differences are less than you might have hoped.

Taiwan's Next Media Animation gets in the fray with the 2011 edition of “Celebrities Flunking Science.” You'll never look at high-heeled shoes -- or sea water -- the same way again.

Tom Tomorrow presents This Modern World's Year in Review, Part 1 and Part 2.

Keith Knight examines the rigorous screening process for hiring local police.

Tom the Dancing Bug brings news of a strange message from space, but don't worry -- the experts have it coverred.

Celebrating the Marvel Comics legend's 89th birthday last week, Comic Riffs serves up The Top 20 quotes by Stan “The Man” Lee.

Red Meat's Ted Johnson can't wait to break out his new Christmas toy. You might feel differently.

The Comic Curmudgeon assumes the worst and, given the context, he's probably right. (At least you'll learn a new word. It means “living in a cooperative group in which usually one female and several males are reproductively active and the nonbreeding individuals care for the young or protect and provide for the group,” such as termites, ants, and -- sweartogod -- naked mole rats.)

Matt Bors offers help for sufferers of PCLD.

Portland homeboy Jack Ohman presents Profiles in Discourage. It's not fun.

This is your brain. This is your brain on spinach. Today's pick, “Rodeo Romeo,” was directed in 1946 by Izzy Sparber. I mentioned this one in passing last January, in connection with a 1934 Betty Boop short in which everyone gets wasted on a dentist's laughing gas; there was a lot of unsubstanted internet chatter that the content had caused the Boop toon to be censored. But in “Rodeo Romeo,” Popeye and Bluto halucinate (and fantasize about nontraditional sexual practices) while on “locoweed” -- and I can't find so much as a hint that any TV programmers or audience groups lifted an eyebrow. Go figure.

I share your hope (if not your optimism) that 2012 will be better than 2011.

Happy new year!

MK: I've discovered that the key to new year's resolutions is careful management of the expectation level. Hope 2012 is a good one for you.
