The next front in our Global War on Everything?

Poor George Bush. Mister Twenty-Eight Percent doesn't get many hero's welcomes these days. And even when he does . . .

Well, see for yourself. Here's Bush working a cheering crowd in Albania on Sunday.

Note carefully that, at the 00:50 mark, he's got a black-band wrist watch on his left wrist.

By the 01:00 mark he doesn't. (H/t to Crooks and Liars.)

(I ran the clip several times and it really looks like you can see the fellow who nabs the watch--first he has both hands on Bush's hand and wrist, then he quickly backs away. But the quality of the video isn't good enough to be sure.)

They stole the watch off the wrist of the President of the United States?? And not off of one of the forgiving presidents, either--not off of, say, Jimmy Carter, who'd probably have given his watch to the guy if he'd asked--but off of the most vindictive, score-settling president in US history?

Ten out of ten for balls, Albania, but negative five million for smart foreign policy. Remember what happened the last time Albania crossed us?

Winifred Ames: Why Albania?
Conrad 'Connie' Brean: Why not?
Winifred Ames: What have they done to us?
Conrad 'Connie' Brean: What have they done FOR us? What do you know about them?
Winifred Ames: Nothing.
Conrad 'Connie' Brean: See? They keep to themselves. Shifty. Untrustable.

Last time, Bush went to war over WMDs that didn't even exist. This time we know there was a wrist watch, because you guys helpfully got it on film.

Trust me on this one, Albania: You really do not want to find out if the footage of that smart bomb flying down the chimney was real or not.

I was wondering when someone was going to notice the irony inherent in the President going to Albania.

The watch-stealing was just a bonus.

SJK: You're exactly right. Disturbingly so. As soon as I heard he was in Albania, the whole Mamet/DeNiro/Heche thing popped into mind.

But it wasn't until the windfall of the disappearing watch that I knew I had to go with it.

By the way, Colbert ran a much better clip tonight of the same event--the watch-lifting moment is much clearer. He said that Secret Service took the watch off for him. [So much for those who doubt people get their news from Colbert and Stewart...]
