The socialist experiment known as the GI Bill

(Context: I've been having trouble with my scanner, which has slowed down a post I've had [almost] ready for Veterans Day for some time. It's that classic p3 combination of semi-obscure pop culture reference with deeply pitched historical analogy--the sort of thing that makes this blog a cultural/intellectual/political bellwether. As you all know. So, while we're all waiting:)

Digby has a great piece on that incredible socialist experiment, that un-American slab of liberal pork known as . . . the GI Bill.

Remember: The powers that got voted out last week are the powers that think the GI Bill is a despicable, wrong-headed program created by "ideologues," whose "ulterior motives" were to "purg[e] traditional notions of merit and class" from American education and lavish federal money upon colleges and universities who "wanted government subsidies, just as they do today."

As Digby asks: "Now who is it that supports the troops again --- the conservative Club for Growth-style extremists like that guy I quoted above, or the Democratic party?"
