The prevailing spin on the return of Trent Lott in the role of GOP Minority Whip (what a wonderfully Dickensian title for him!) in the Senate is that this is a story of fall, atonement, and redemption.
Not even close. They didn't welcome him back because he's changed; they welcomed him back because he hasn't.
Lott's a marketable commodity in GOP circles again because the Republicans are this close to being a regional party--the Old South being their last toehold--and who better than Lott to keep those ties alive?
As Colbert helpfully observed, from Minority Whip it's only one step to Grand Klegal.
