Amendment to desecrate the flag by outlawing desecration of the flag fails in Senate

MSNBC is reporting that the flag-burning amendment failed by one vote in the Senate today.

Helpfully, MSNBC.com's story managed to find and include a photo of one of the 45 recorded incidents of inappropriate flag-burning in the 229 years since the flag was adopted as our nation's symbol. (Here's a photo of appropriate flag burning; think the difference is worth amending the constitution to restrict our freedoms under the Bill of Rights for the first time since they were adopted?)

As predicted, Oregon's senators split: Smith voted for the amendment, Wyden voted against it.
