Bush: Easier to take in the age of DVRs

The Daily Show seems to be on a major roll this week. (Update: Jane at FDL has the early review on tonight's episode. It's still 45 minutes in the future where I am.)

Last night was one of the funniest, most dead-on opening reports that Stewart's done in weeks--since before the Oscars, I'd say. Beginning with coverage of the pseudo-event* of Bush giving another one of his still-in-campaign-mode speeches about Iraq, Stewart asks the obvious question: Given that Bush is given the same speech over and over, regardless of what's going on in Reality Land, do we really need to bother listening to the new ones as if they're anything more than the old ones recycled?

And he provides the obvious answer: No, in the age of TiVo, we really don't. What follows is the Ultimate Generic Bush Iraq Speech, stitched together word-by-word from all the previous indistinguishable speeches. Priceless. Next time you hear that Bush has an Iraq speech scheduled, just replay this clip and then get on with things that really matter in your life. Laundry, perhaps.

The indispensable Crooks & Liars has it in Windows and QuickTime formats. (Update: Broken C&L link fixed. Sorry.)

(*Hats off to Randi Rhodes, by the way, for pointing out that Bush gives these creampuff speeches in the afternoon, when no one will be watching, simply so that the fact of their occurrence will be reported on--and a few sound bites thrashed about second-hand--by the cable pundits in the evening.)

But last night's show may pale to insignificance in comparison to tonight's show: The guest is the bane of the Democratic professional election losers inside the Beltway, and the darling of the rank and file, Senator Russ "Safe, Shmafe--Let's Censure Him" Feingold.

Must see tee-vee.
