(Updated below.)
I was at the Purdue Memorial Union, just across the street from Neil Armstrong's old fraternity house, watching Walter Cronkite get choked up about this.
p.s. If anyone knows of a link to a video clip of a jubilant (and sleep-deprived) Cronkite repeating "Oh, boy . . . oh, boy . . . " when the Eagle landed, please let me know and I'll update with it. Thanks.
Update July 20, 2008: Here it is.

I was in the US Army Reserves 2 week training camp at Sharp Army Depot, Stockton, Ca watching the landing on a black and white TV set in the recreation room, virtually alone. No one else was that interested! Roy V
Hey, Roy--
Wow. Hard to believe no one there was that interested--perhaps because the Apollo Project was run by the Navy and Marine show-offs? For me--raised on Robert Heinlein and Jonny Quest--it was unforgettable.
