"These wounds I had on Crispin's day."

Steve Gilliard's an interesting piece of work. He'll write 5 or 10 really angry--Richard Prior angry, usually without the tempering humor--posts in a row, like this one, then put up one on the homey virtues of macaroni and cheese.

Then he comes roaring back with something like this.

I'm finally beginning to believe he--Gilliard or the Bard of Avon or both; take your pick--is right: Bush, Rove, Cheney, DeLay, and the rest of the GOP gangsters may well have pushed this country to the tipping point, such that it could take a generation to undo the harm they've caused. Alito's gonna get confirmed, meaning we can kiss privacy rights or protection against Big Government or Big Corporations goodbye; the Dems may not be able to pull off a victory in either house of Congress, meaning that the only Constitutional defense against an Executive branch run amok is at least three more years away; and Bush will continue to trash the New Deal/Great Society and gut the Constitution more with every passing day.

The only consolation and honor in the next few years is, as Henry told his men, to know you raised your sword in battle now. I haven't worked this out completely but, despite our patriotic outrage, I don't think any of us is off the hook for what is to come unless we dig in. Call, write, organize, volunteer, contribute, boycott--whatever.

Man, I'm depressed. No wonder he posted that macaroni and cheese recipe.
