Saturday morning tunes: The days grow short when you reach September


Written by Maxwell Anderson and Kurt Weill for “Knickerbocker Holiday” (1938) and originally performed by -- ready? -- Walter Huston. (Like “Send in the Clowns,” it was written for a non-singer who had to deliver it in short phrases between breaths.)

It was later recorded by (among a zillion others) the old silver-tongued devil himself.
