Sunday morning toons

Daryl Cagle gives us the New Year's toon wrap-up.

p3 Picks of the Week: Mike Lane, Bill Day, Richard Crowson, and Mike Luckovich.

Ann Telnaeus smells smoke.

Opus is reminded that there are some things you can curl up and get cozy with, and some things you can't. (Salon Premium.)

p3 Bonus Toon: Jesse Springer reflects on the unusual feeling of having Der Governator on our side (click to enlarge):

By the way: As many of you probably know, Gmail, run by Google, pays for itself by matching print ads (aka "sponsored links") on a sidebar to the apparent content of the email you're currently reading, like what you see when you do a Google search.

It's a little creepy at first, but benign. In fact, watching it struggle to suggest an ad that's appropriate to whatever you're reading can sometimes be pretty funny. Case in point, the email from Jesse Springer containing the toon above.

Here's a screen grab of the sponsored links Gmail thought would be a good match with the content of Jesse's note (click to enlarge):

Notice one of those links that's not like the others? Hot air and noxious fumes, indeed. I think Google's ad-sales algorithm has a sense of humor.
